Gastric Plication

Laparoscopic Gastric Plication

Safe, effective, with low cost

Laparoscopic Gastric Plication is a technique to limit stomach’s capacity, without necessarily removing a part of or placing any foreign part in the stomach. The particular method has gained ground among the other methods to treat obesity, due to the results it presents and its low cost. It is a bariatric operation with immediate results, brief hospital stay, and the quantity of the food that the patient can consume after the operation is significantly reduced, because the stomach is 3 times smaller than before. This is due to the fact that the secretion of the hormone responsible for the sense of hunger, ghrelin, is “eliminated”.

In particular, the procedure followed during Laparoscopic Gastric Plication is to ply stomach’s greater curvature inside.  Essentially, the stomach is plied; no part of it is removed. That way we reduce stomach’s capacity and patients require much less amount food than that required before the operation.

It has a lot in common with the gastric sleeve, i.e. sleeve gastrectomy, but the basic and most important difference between the two is that in sleeve gastrectomy we remove part of the stomach, while in Gastric placation we ply it.

The particular operation has many advantages compared to the other methods. First, it requires much shorter stay in the hospital –only one day- and patients may return to their activities without feeling pain. It is a minor operation. Moreover, no foreign body is inserted in the organization, which prevents potential complications, such as infection, stomach’s erosion, displacement, etc, which could occur with gastric band surgery. No further monitoring and post-operational regulation is required after the operation, as with gastric banding. Also, the digestive system’s operation is normal and patients do not restrict their dietary habits.

As to its risks, gastric plication is considered one of the safest bariatric operations, with zero mortality rates. Even if rare complications appear, for instance broken sutures, the patient’s life is not at risk. Finally, a very important factor for the gastric plication operation, especially in our days, is its low cost.
